Meet Anthony Riley, Theology I Seminarian for the Archdiocese of Detroit.
How did you experience God’s call to be a priest?
I never heard a loud booming voice from the sky, but God used the voices of others to get my attention and to give me guidance. I was very involved at my parish, and many people spoke to me about considering a vocation to priesthood. I began paying closer attention to the inner movements of the Holy Spirit, and I realized God was filling my heart with a deep sense of peace, that priesthood is the right path for me.
How has your relationship with Jesus grown since you entered seminary?
This is what seminary is all about: growing in your relationship with Jesus. The Lord has helped me to lay aside my expectations, not to depend on myself, and to trust in his plan. God is bigger than my circumstances and possesses all wisdom, and we can rest in his understanding.
Did you have any fears about pursuing the call to the priesthood? If so, how did you overcome them?
I remember being fearful about celibacy and not having a family before entering seminary, but I didn’t allow that fear to push the idea of a vocation away. I realized the fear I experienced wasn’t from God. God leads us by giving confidence in his call and his mercy! By God’s grace, I joyfully make a gift of myself, to serve the Lord and his Church with an undivided heart.
What attracts you about the priesthood?
I look forward to celebrating the sacraments and sharing the saving truth of Jesus with others.
Who has helped you the most on your journey to pursue this vocation?
I receive a lot of support from my pastor, other priests, deacons and my friends. They’ve helped me to hear and answer God’s call. I owe a great debt of gratitude to all of them for their prayers and guidance.
Do you have any advice for young men considering a vocation to the priesthood?
Don’t be afraid! Fear is never of God. If you feel the Lord may be calling you to serve him as a priest, please reach out to your pastor for guidance in your discernment. Keep praying! Pray the rosary everyday. Our Blessed Mother will lead you to your vocation. I also recommend reading the book To Save A Thousand Souls: A Guide for Discerning a Vocation to Diocesan Priesthood by Fr. Brett Brannon.
